How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take? Guest Bath vs. Primary Suite Timelines

A realistic look at how long guest bath refreshes and primary suite remodels each take, from demo to final walkthrough.

Two Different Projects, Two Different Timelines

Guest bath refreshes typically finish in 3-4 weeks, while primary suites with layout changes usually run 5-8 weeks. The gap between those two numbers comes down to scope: a guest bath refresh generally keeps the existing footprint, while a primary suite remodel more often involves moving plumbing, expanding a shower footprint, or adding a second vanity, each of which adds time for rough-in and inspection.

Guest Bath: Week by Week

Week 1 typically covers demo and any plumbing or electrical work tied to fixture changes, handled in-house rather than through separately scheduled subcontractors. Weeks 2-3 cover tile work, vanity installation, and fixture setting, since tile needs time to cure properly before grout and fixtures go in.

Week 3-4 wraps up with final plumbing and electrical connections, trim, hardware, and a final walkthrough. Because the footprint isn't changing, there's typically only one inspection point to schedule rather than the rough-in and final inspection sequence a layout change requires.

Primary Suite: Week by Week

Weeks 1-2 cover demo and rough-in, this is where plumbing lines move if the shower footprint is changing or a second vanity is being added, and where electrical work happens for heated floors, updated lighting, or a towel warmer. A rough-in inspection is scheduled before walls close up.

Weeks 3-5 cover tile work, which takes longer in a primary suite given the larger shower footprint, often a curbless design, and sometimes a separate tub. Custom vanity installation and glass enclosure templating typically happen in this window as well, similar to how countertop templating works in a kitchen remodel.

Weeks 6-8 finish with fixture installation, glass enclosure setting, final plumbing and electrical connections, and a final inspection. Larger primary suite projects with significant layout changes can run toward the higher end of this range, particularly if custom glass or vanity pieces have their own lead time.
